HOW MUCH DOES A BERNESE PUPPY COST?
Pictured "Daisy" - Malicloy Butterfly Kiss @ 8 weeks
This is often a question that is hard to ask a breeder and one that is often forgotten about until you are well into the purchase of a puppy. Please don't feel ashamed or embarrassed to ask about how much a puppy is from any breeder.
WHY ARE PUPPIES SO EXPENSIVE?
We can't speak for other breeders in Australia, however we ourselves invest huge amounts of time and money into this breed. Our aim is to break even with the costs vs expenses of breeding this magnificent breed.... but alas we never do! Lol.
We travel Australia regularly to attend Dog Shows and prove the worth of our breeding stock. Our show wins speak volumes as to the quality of the dogs we have imported and bred here at Malicloy Park. Look at our "Major Show WIns" page to see for yourself!! We attend all the Australian Specialties with our dogs and also attend yearly the American National Specialty for Bernese.
To keep improving the breed in the future we need to import new bloodlines that will add qualities to our dogs that we need. As we only want to import the best quality dogs into Australia, we tend to import adult dogs that have had all their health testing done and we know exactly what we are getting. There are no hidden surprises for us as there would be if we imported a younger puppy. Every import has cost us between $15'000 AUD and $25'000 AUD depending on who bred the dog and what wins the dog has had prior to it coming to Australia. A fact a lot of people don't realise is that for every successful import we have imported, there is probably 4 that have been paid for and rejected to become a part of our breeding household. Importing quality dogs with great temperaments is a very costly proposition and one that is not taken lightly.
We health test all the breeding dogs within our modest kennel here at Malicloy Park. As an example, we hip and elbow score our breeding dog using both Australian methods and by a method known as PennHIP as we feel is give a better evaluation as to the joint condition of our breeding dogs. For both methods to be done comes at a cost of $900 per dog. Along with this we test for DM, VWD, Eye conditions, Heart abnormalities, at a bare minimum.
All of this costs money. We are conscientious breeders and try our best to breed healthy good tempered dogs!
- We charge $6000 + GST for puppies to enjoy as a family pets and not to be bred with. At our discretion, puppies will come with a Tubal Ligation or Vasectomy so they can not be bred with. (Most puppies within Australia costs between $5000 and $8500, with an average cost of approximately $6000). We do require a $2000 ($500 non refundable) deposit to be paid, upon the arrival of a litter born from which you will be getting a puppy from.
- For those interested, we don't sell show dogs nor breeding prospects to people not already deeply involved with the breed. We show all our own dogs and for this reason we only seek great family homes for all our puppies that we don't personally keep.
- We only breed when we wish to keep something from a particular mating and therefore only tend to have 1 to 4 litters per year. We don't breed dogs to meet puppy enquiry demand!
- All puppies stay with us until they are ready to go to their new homes and after we have made our final choices of which puppy we will keep, usually about 8-12 weeks old.
- Every pup is Micro-chipped, Vaccinated, Wormed and comes with ANKC Pedigree Papers on Limited Register, as well as the same food that we have raised the pups on.
